****Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher

A Magic Shop Book

by Bruce Coville

Reviewed October 6, 2005.
Harcourt, San Diego, 2002.  First published in 1991.  151 pages.
Available at Sembach Library (JF COV).

Bruce Coville was my oldest son’s favorite author when he was in upper elementary school.  Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher tells a story that every kid would like to have happen to them.

Jeremy was already having problems on the day he wandered into a magic shop, which he’d never seen before.  The mysterious proprietor gives him a beautiful egg, and then the librarian gives him a book about dragons.  When the egg hatches, Jeremy has a beautiful baby dragon to feed, care for, communicate with and hide.  Not surprisingly, adventures with Tiamat change Jeremy’s life forever.

What would you do if you had the care of the ultimate pet?  But how long could such a thing last?  How big can a dragon get?
