*****The Lord of the Rings

by J. R. R. Tolkien

Reviewed October 10, 2001.
A Sonderbooks' Best Book of 2001
Available at Sembach Library  (F TOL).

We’re re-reading these books to our kids at bedtime, and my younger boy just took up The Hobbit, to read on his own, so they are on my mind.  If you haven’t read them yet, I hear the movie’s coming out soon, so seize the opportunity to read the original first.

What can I say?  There’s nothing like the Tolkien books.  He single-handedly revived the fantasy genre.  He has an incredible vocabulary--we’re finding lots of words to look up when we read aloud--and a love of language.  I personally like The Hobbit better, since the story is simpler.  The Lord of the Rings tends to drag in places, but unquestionably has a grand scope.  Tolkien wrote The Lord of the Rings during World War II, and perhaps it’s therapeutic to read about a struggle against evil that is completely unambiguous.

Reviews of other books by J. R. R. Tolkien:
The Hobbit
Smith of Wooton Major and Farmer Giles of Ham
Letters from Father Christmas
