****The Oasis

A Memoir of Love and Survival

by Petru Popescu

Reviewed September 2001.
A Sonderbooks' Best Book of 2001
2001.  Available at Sembach Library.  (920 POP)

I won’t describe this book as happy and cheering, but it is beautiful and powerful.  The Oasis is the love story of a couple who met in a concentration camp toward the end of World War II.  The man, Mirek, was a prisoner, but also an electrician who was sent out to defuse bombs and continued to work for the Czech underground.  The book is filled with suspense as to how they will survive and find each other after the war.  Any time they saw one another in the camp, they risked horrible punishment.  The story of their love is amazing and inspiring.  This book is outstanding.
