Militant Islam, Oil and Fundamentalism in Central Asia

by Ahmed Rashid

Reviewed October 24, 2001.
Yale University Press.  2000.  Available at Sembach Libary (regular shelves, 958.104 RAS).

This book is not fun reading!  However, it is extremely educational and incredibly timely.

If you would like to know more about the history of Afghanistan, especially focusing on the years after the break-up of the Soviet Union, this is an excellent place to start.  It was disturbing to read of the ways that the United States and its allies encouraged the Taliban, and even radical Moslems like Osama bin Laden, simply because they were against the Soviets.  Though there is nothing simple about the situation in Afghanistan.  This book will give you perspectives on some of the many different issues involved.  Besides that, many of the long foreign words and names will begin to make sense to you when you hear them in the news!
