***Goin' Someplace Special

by Patricia McKissack

illustrated by Jerry Pinkney

Reviewed October 17, 2001.
An Anne Schwartz Book.  Atheneum Books for Young Readers.  2001.
Available at Sembach Library (E MCK)

Based on her own experiences as a young girl, Patricia McKissack writes about ‘Tricia Ann’s trip on her own to “Someplace Special.”  She has to ride in the back of the bus, can’t sit on the park bench, and passes stores with signs “For Whites Only.”  But the Someplace Special--the Public Library--is Free for All.  A beautiful book with a good message.
