A Life in Poems

by Marilyn Nelson

Reviewed November 21, 2002.
A Newbery Honor Book.  Winner of a Coretta Scott King Honor Award.
Front Street, Asheville, North Carolina, 2001.  103 pages.
Available at Sembach Library (JB CAR)

The idea for this book is original:  A biography in poetry.  The result is beautiful, inspiring and informative.

I knew little about George Washington Carver before I read this book.  I knew he had worked with peanuts, but had little idea of the scope of his genius and the extent of his work.  The poetry in this book is meditative, speaking in the voices of George Washington Carver and many of the people in his life.  The result paints a picture of a great man.
