****The Zygote Chronicles

by Suzanne Finnamore

Reviewed March 9, 2002.
Grove Press, 2002.  126 pages.

I loved this book!  The Zygote Chronicles is the story of a pregnancy, from start to finish.  It’s not clear how much the story is fictionalized--It is told in first person, and the author uses her own name.

This is the sort of book that makes me chuckle aloud and start reading bits to innocent bystanders.  It hit exactly on some of the wild emotions that you experience during pregnancy, the whole astonishing journey of mind and body.  She mentions funny little things I’d almost forgotten like your exaggerated sense of smell.  One of my favorite bits was when she felt nauseous simply because her husband was chewing too loudly in the other room.  A heart-warming, insightful, and delightfully funny little book.
