I don't review books I don't like!

***A Writer's Book of DaysA Spirited Companion & Lively Muse for the Writing Lifeby Judy ReevesNew World Library, Novato, California, 1999. 217 pages. This book doesn’t have a reading selection for every day of the year, but it does have a writing prompt for every day of the year, things like: “These are the pleasures I have known.”; “Write about leaving.”; “Describe the contents of someone’s closet.”; and “Just beyond the edge of the woods.” Besides the writing prompts, for every few days there are essays about the writing life full of advice and encouragement, as well as quotations from other writers. I found myself using less and less of the writing prompts, wanting to use my writing time to work on writing my book, but I still find dipping into this book a nice start to a day’s work of writing. If you’re looking for a push to get you going at writing practice, this book is perfect. Even if not, it will encourage anyone who intends to be a writer. “‘Writing is as much discipline as it is desire,’ said novelist Christopher A. Bohjalian. ‘Don’t wait until you’re inspired, because if you do, you’ll never finish anything.’” Copyright © 2005 Sondra Eklund.
