Nuggets of Wisdom From All Collected Works

by George MacDonald

Reviewed October 29, 2002.
Sunrise Books, Eureka, California, 1996.  218 pages.

I only discovered George MacDonald since I came to Germany, so this favorite isn’t so very old.  Only this week, a friend told me that reading George MacDonald had changed his life, and I feel the same way myself.  Of course, we aren’t the only ones—C. S. Lewis said the same, as have a large number of other respected Christian thinkers.

This book presents pithy quotations from George MacDonald’s works.  The editors at Sunrise Books sought to “present the wisdom of George MacDonald in concisely-framed statements.”  They collected such statements from every one of his published works.

The result is beautiful—gems of wisdom, with layers of meaning.  I would read a page or two as part of my devotions, and it gave me thoughts to mull over all day long.  Simple and succinct, yet full of many levels of meaning, this book is also a good introduction to George MacDonald’s wisdom.
