***Here Comes Our Bride!

An African Wedding Story

by Ifeoma Onyefulu

Reviewed November 18, 2004.
Frances Lincoln Children’s Books, 2004.  First published in Great Britain.  32 pages.
Available at Sembach Library (J 392.509 ONY).

Here’s a simple photo-illustrated story about a traditional wedding in Nigeria.  The story is told from the perspective of Ekindose, a child in the family who’s impatient to know when Uncle Osaere and Aunt Efosa are going to get married.

A traditional African marriage brings together not just two people but two families as well.  The story and photographs show us the steps in the process, including the list of special things that the groom’s family must collect and bring to test whether the groom can take good care of the bride.

This is a lovely and fascinating look at a happy celebration of people from another culture.  A story that adults will enjoy reading to kids.
