****The Weight of a Mass

A Tale of Faith

by Josephine Nobisso

illustrated by Katalin Szegedi

Reviewed April 20, 2004.
Gingerbread House, Westhampton Beach, New York, 2002.  32 pages.
Available at Sembach Library (E NOB).

Here’s an inspiring tale about a woman who begged for bread, offering to say a Mass for the baker in exchange.  The baker scoffs, and writes “one mass” on a piece of paper.  When he weighs it on his scale, not all the goods in his whole shop can lift the weight of that mass.

This story, based on an actual legend, is beautifully told.  It makes one think about the true value of things that the world might not always think important.
