***Dream-of-Jade

The Emperor's Cat

by Lloyd Alexander

illustrated by D. Brent Burkett

Reviewed January 2, 2006.
Cricket Books, Chicago, 2005.  48 pages.
Available at Sembach Library (JF ALE).

This book is presented in picture book format, but the stories are longer and suitable for older readers than the usual picture book crowd.

We have five stories telling how the cat Dream-of-Jade became the emperor’s best friend, and how through her wisdom and cleverness she advised the king better than any of his other officials.  Dream-of-Jade usually presents a twist on an idea that the reader wouldn’t think of.  The stories culminate with Dream-of-Jade replacing the pompous Chief Minister.

These stories are clever, entertaining, fun, and beautifully illustrated.  They’d make good story-telling stories for upper elementary school kids.
